First, I hope you had an awesome Thanksgiving. It's always nice to get home and see family and friends. Or even starting new traditions on your own. We're now in a funky time in the holiday season. One were we spend more time looking in the rear view at the holiday we just left and planning for the holidays to come. Some days drag, some speed by. You enter and leave the office in darkness. Seasonal depression is real!
Here are a couple ideas to make the most of this month before *snap* it's 2019 and we're ready to rock. We'd love to hear more on what you try to get through the holiday rut.
1. Read a Book.
-Come on, you have a month you got this! Here's a quick list of 5 that Bill Gates loved in 2018. I just started Hanif Abdurraqib's "They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us." A collection of essays on music, life and everything in between. Check out my buddy's review on it here.
2. Re-Connect with Old Friends.
-Reach out to 3 or more friends from your childhood you haven't spoken with in a bit. Plan to reconnect over the Christmas break and make the most of that downtown when you're hanging around the house feeling stir-crazy!
3. Get to a Concert.
We're in an age where our physical connection to music is dwindling. Everything is streamed. Records are hip, CDs are gone. A concert is our last real physical feel to the music we love. Dance, sweat, bump into somebody and apologize (I'm too tall for the front row).
-Apps like Bandsintown are great. Just plug in your city, and it will populate concerts based on your musical tastes.
4. Break Up the Routine
We're creatures of habit, but work and a workout alone take up a good portion of the day. It's important to be open to change even if it comes midday. Invited to a happy hour with coworkers you haven't connected with yet? Why not? Want to ditch cooking for a night out and a movie? Do it! Habits are important, but don't let them control your day!
5. Try a new workout
Personally, I've been really into Orangetheory. It all started with a free class and trying something new. Find a gym near you and give it a shot. My wife has also recommended ClassPass, an app that provides access to yoga, strength training, barre, martial arts, pilates, boxing, and indoor cycling classes, as well as use of health clubs via its flat-rate monthly subscription billing.
Have a great start to December and more importantly know that it's a tricky time for everybody. Call a friend and catch up. Go outside, even if it's dark at 4:30p :)
